Kottai is a beautiful village panchayat located within the Kuzhalmannam block in the Alathur taluk of Palakkad district. The main geographical features of this area are as follows:
Boundaries and Location
Geographically, Kottai is situated in the central part of the Palakkad plains.
- North: Bharathapuzha (Nila river), Mankara Panchayat
- South: Kuthanur Panchayat
- East: Mathur Panchayat
- West: Peringottukurussi Panchayat
Area and Topography
- Area: The total area of this panchayat is approximately 19.86 square kilometers.
- Topography: This is a midland plain region located in the central part of Kerala. The topography here consists of gently undulating hilly terrains, vast paddy fields, and streams. The strong winds blowing through the Palakkad Gap significantly influence the landscape and climate of this area.
Water Bodies and Agriculture
The proximity to the Bharathapuzha River and the network of canals passing through the region make Kottai rich in water resources.
- Agriculture: This is primarily an agricultural village. Paddy cultivation is the main source of livelihood here. Apart from this, coconut, areca nut, and vegetables are also widely cultivated.
- Soil: The soil found here is generally a fertile mix of black soil and red soil, which is highly suitable for paddy cultivation.
Climate
Due to the influence of the Palakkad Gap, a generally dry tropical climate is experienced here.
- Extreme heat is felt during the months from March to May.
- The region receives excellent rainfall from the Edavappathi (Southwest Monsoon) and Thulavarsham (Northeast Monsoon).
Cultural Geography
The cultural background of this place is as famous as its geographical features. The renowned Chembai village, the birthplace of the emperor of Carnatic music, Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar, is located in the Kottai Panchayat.
